Editor,

Just a few costs to us taxpayers from the Trump administration should alarm voters of both parties. The first six days of the Iran war have cost taxpayers $11.3 billion. Detention centers cost taxpayers $29 billion annually, $75 million daily and individually $152 per day. I thought Trump’s promise to deport “illegal aliens” was meant in part to save taxpayers’ money? He did not campaign on detention centers. Trump’s net worth gained by his presidency was $3 billion the first year, $4 billion so far. My friend yesterday filled her gas tank for $60.

Hilarious. Hey Ms. Brown, please read the recent City Journal article about Gavin Newsom’s Empire of Fraud. No googling needed, here’s the link (https://www.city-journal.org/article/gavin-newsom-california-fraud). If you feel shortchanged by not having to do homework, you can google “how much did Biden give Ukraine” to see the enormous amount given to a war that is not ours to fight. If you’re okay with those $billions being wasted, I can’t imagine you’re too concerned about your alleged $11.3 billion. BTW, how much did your friend spend to fill her gas tank under Biden? I bet it was considerably higher. And higher still thanks to California gas taxes.Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Not to mention the overall cost of having such an uneducated moron as Trump in charge!

Susan, you're brilliant, you got Trump. How about this as a counter, Joe Biden, your democrat President allowed somewhere between 20 & 30 million immigrants illegally into the USA. Let's just say 20 million so you don't you look too bad. Each illegal immigrant cost US taxpayers $69K per year. Can you do the math or are there too many zeros? Let me help, 20,000,000 x $69,000 =1.38×10¹² or $1.38 TRILLION. BTW, $1.38 trillion is more than $60 Billion and your friend google is a biased democrat in case you didn't know.

Thank you Ms. Brown for bringing our attention to the financial costs of current policy. Before the war, the military budget was around $900B per annum. Shortly after the US and Israel attacked Iran, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth asked Congress for an additional $200B for the war. The Big Beautiful Bill last year added an additional $600B to military spending. That’s a doubling of military spending. And now Trump is asking for that much for the proposed 2027 budget. He’s asking for $1.5T. That’s a staggering amount for what was already the biggest military budget in the world. It nearly doubled. Where will this extra $600B come from? The Trump budget is cutting $73B from non-defense spending, a 10% cut including to social benefits, but that’s not enough (https://finance.yahoo.com/news/trump-economy-already-exploding-national-194520670.html).

Last year the only significant revenue the US had was tariffs, which was about $287B. This is being spent on the war. So we need to increase taxes. This of course is not very likely. Instead, we’ll continue borrowing. The national debt is $35T. Our investors in the Middle East and the rest of the world have to start pulling out because their revenues are going down and they have to pay down their own debts. The availability of energy and other raw materials, like helium for computer chip production and urea and ammonia, the components for fertilizer, will be down for years. That’s decreased production and rising costs for raw materials. With the shortage of fertilizer, food prices will go up up, but there’s the real possibility it could lead to a global food shortage. Countries will have to take care of their won populations and not lend money to us. It gets worse (https://michael-hudson.com/2026/03/inflation-first-deflation-next/). We need to hang up a victory banner and end the war now.

ClashFan - you are throwing a lot of numbers around. As usual, statistics taken out of context can support your myopic position. However, if one looks at the big picture, which appears to be beyond your comprehension, revenue growth, as projected by the OMB, far out strips the outlay increases for our DOD. Though, I wished we would revert to DOD instead of Pete's juvenile DOW. He's got to go!

Hey ClashFan, it’s my understanding that Iran has plenty of oil and as such, we can have Iran repay us for all the money we’ve spent to liberate them. For a higher ROI, we can have motion picture studio accountants run the numbers. Not only will we recoup $600B, we may recoup more than $1.5T. Also, by cutting out federal taxpayer waste from blue states such as California and New York, I imagine $600B would be easily recovered.. BTW, in response to Mr. van Ulden’s DOW back to DOD, I’d prefer we rename the department to the Department of Annihilation. DOA.
