Regarding the April 6 story, “Study says HWY 101 congestion is better,” the subhead says, “transit experts are wary.” Speaking only for myself, I note that some are more than wary, we reject this study as fatally flawed. The data selected are not comparable and the methodology is flawed. No peer reviewed forum would accept this. The SMCTA, C/CAG and the JPA need to bring in the experts from UC Davis to weigh in.
For nearly a year preceding this study, the 101 Managed Lanes JPA staff came back time and again and said that 101 General Purpose Lanes had more cars, slower speeds, more congestion and very likely more GHG’s, more pollutants, less safety. Their reports noted that even in the Express Lanes there were more trips, and therefore more VMT, and likely more GHGs, and pollution and less safety. When directly asked, this study’s consultants could not explain the discrepancy.
Anyone who has been driving on 101 knows, from direct experience, that since the express lanes opened that 101 is more congested, with more cars, and longer trip times.
We widened the highway and yet it is as crowded as before. Meanwhile, Caltrain is struggling to get back to pre-pandemic ridership. Why are we spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to encourage more people to drive instead of taking Caltrain???
