A child died at an after-school program held at McKinley Elementary School in Burlingame this week, school district officials said Friday.
Burlingame School District Superintendent Marla Silversmith shared the news with families in an email Friday. The child was not a student in the school district.
No details were provided on how the death occurred, out of respect for the privacy of the child and family. The after-school program was operated by a private organization on the school’s campus, according to the email.
Angela Swartz, a parent of a 5-year-old at McKinley Elementary School, said the limited information provided to families has been frustrating.
“You want to know that what happened is just an isolated incident,” Swartz said. “You wonder if my kid’s safe going to school? Kids are vulnerable and you want to know they’re safe.”

McKinley Elementary School Principal Susana Fernandez sent an email to families at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday addressing the presence of a fire truck and ambulance called in response to “an isolated medical incident.”
There has been no indication whether the emergency response Wednesday was related.
“Our hearts are with the family, loved ones, and all those impacted by this heartbreaking loss,” Silversmith said in Friday’s email.
Resources will be available for children and families who may need support during this time, Silversmith said.
