The Burlingame School District is prepared to make a quick decision to replace tables in the multipurpose rooms at its schools if found necessary after a 6-year-old died at one of tis campuses in May.
The root cause of the incident is still unconfirmed, but should the district find it necessary to change its wall-in tables for one reason or another, the district trustees approved a “piggyback” contract that allows its superintendent to approve a contract as soon as desired.
The Board of Trustees typically does not meet on a regular basis in the summer, and the piggyback contract lets Superintendent Marla Silversmith enter an agreement with a supplier as rapidly as possible to ensure timely completion, if chosen.
“Should I want to change the tables, to do something, I want to have that option,” Silversmith said. “We haven’t been told we need to change them, but we want to be able to pivot if we choose to do something.”
The tables in the multipurpose rooms are in need of being replaced, anyway, considering the last time they were updated, Silversmith said.
“We don’t want any delays to happen, we want to be able to move forward with what we can to keep and maintain safety,” Silversmith said.
