Editor,
In regard to the recent Stanford expansion project in Redwood City, it will be a major burden to the community. The roads are already gummed up and will not be able to support more traffic in this area.
Woodside Road, Broadway, Bay Road and Marsh Road are already gridlocked as it is. Stanford will be adding over approximately 1 million square feet into an already compressed small area. How will emergency vehicles and fire get through to reach this hospital when they will most likely be stuck in the gridlock? Stanford University in Palo Alto has plenty of land they could build on. Why they already chose a family-oriented neighborhood for such a large massive medical complex is ridiculous.
At the community engagement presentation they had no answers as to traffic studies, seems to me that would be on the top of the list so emergency vehicles could get through. When asked how much money they paid Redwood City, they had no answer for that as well. This is the wrong neighborhood for such a massive project.

Thanks for your letter, G. Morris, but instead of demonizing only Stanford shouldn’t you also add Redwood City decision makers to your list? It takes two to tango and if Redwood City “leaders” weren’t amenable to Stanford’s expansion, then Stanford wouldn’t be able to expand. What answer did you receive from Redwood City officials in regards to traffic studies or how much (if anything) they received from Stanford?
Fun Fact,
Redwood City's councilwoman Isabella Chu (working for Stanford) did two things:
- approving $500 million to bring more cars, more congestion, more air pollution into this area through the Woodside Interchange project.
- approved using bicycle funding to NOT create bike lanes for children riding to school on Jefferson Avenue.
The question on everyone's mind:
- is she working for Stanford - a YIMBY company - and just happens to be interested in local politics?
- is she "working" for Stanford by pretending to be interested in local politics?
The city saw the same kind of questions with councilwoman Hale "working" for Facebook.
