Foster City approved a plan to make improvements to its park management plan, which may include better swimming spots, more pickleball courts at Leo J. Ryan Park and walking trails at at least several city parks.
The initiative is part of a larger effort to upgrade and potentially expand its parks as the city’s population continues growing.
A recent assessment found that the city had a generally lower level of reservable picnic areas and dog parks compared to other municipalities. And even though the amount of open space is relatively high compared to other similar cities in the region, it may still need to increase its open space to accommodate future growth. The analysis included recommendations to maintain the current level, 3.2 acres per 1,000 residents, which would require about 13 additional acres for park space by 2040.
Some proposals include a former disposal site adjacent to Sea Cloud Park that could potentially transform into open space, given appropriate restoration efforts. Bay Winds Park, some of which is vacant Caltrans property, could also be considered.
The plan outlines broad ideas and recommendations, though the city has not committed to funding or moving forward on anything specific.

“This is just a plan. It doesn’t commit us to anything at this juncture,” Mayor Art Kiesel said during the meeting Dec. 15.
The plan also includes recommendations for more walking trails along Edgewater, Boothbay, Sea Cloud and Sunfish parks, as well as more swimming and waterfront spaces.
“People want to see that lagoon activated and yet they feel some barriers to that,” Peter Winch, principal at the consulting firm Wallace Roberts & Todd, said.
The City Council unanimously approved the plan during the meeting.
Speaking of improvements, did Foster City ever take care of their geese poop problem? Or will these park improvements add more area for geese to do their thing? Perhaps a little extra in the budget for cleaning maintenance, please.
