The National Weather Service is warning of chances of thunderstorms in the Bay Area on Wednesday and even the small possibility of a coastal tornado.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center in Oklahoma said there is a threat of thunderstorms with severe wind gusts and a 2% chance of a tornado along portions of the Bay Area and Central Coast, meteorologist Joe Merchant said.
Merchant said the storm system was similar to one that brought a small tornado to the Scotts Valley area last December. A tornado could also start as a water spout in the ocean that moves on shore, he said.
The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning along the Pacific coastlines because of wind gusts of up to 65 mph expected until 4 a.m. Wednesday.
The weather service has issued a Flood Watch for the region that has been extended through 10 p.m. Friday and is warning of extremely dangerous marine conditions as well through Friday morning.
The weather was relatively quiet around the Bay Area on Tuesday but as of shortly after 3 p.m., Merchant said, “we’re already beginning to see winds ramp up along the coast. We’re just starting to see the onset of impacts.”
After a brief break during the day Wednesday, another system is expected to bring more wet and windy weather late on Christmas Eve and into Christmas Day on Thursday, he said.
