Matthew James Dubuc’s response to my letter (“AI hallucinations,” Nov. 18) misses two vital points.
First, the correct explanation of my surname that he found using Google AI was likely the result of my recent efforts to correct the misinformation that AI is spreading on the Internet. Indeed, the Daily Journal’s online publication of my letter provided the correct information for AI training. AI models are trained, in part, by scraping data from the Internet. Thank you, Daily Journal!
Second, as I said before, the mistaken claim that my surname originated in England instead of Germany is a relatively minor matter. The larger picture is that AI models are burying much more important facts under misinformation (“hallucinations”). Who will correct those errors?
For every job that AI may eliminate, perhaps it will create two jobs for fact checkers — if we can figure out how to pay them.
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Halfhill. The last I checked, Google’s AI Mode includes a disclaimer at the bottom, “AI can make mistakes, so double-check responses”? Kind of defeats the purpose of using AI if you want facts, doesn’t it? If one insists on using AI, a friendly reminder to always check references used for AI-generated responses. If they include Wikipedia or other fake news media, discount the response. BTW, does anyone know how to obtain an AI response directing AI to not use Wikipedia or other fake news media (such as Reuters, AP, NYT, PBS, CNN, etc.) as a reference?
