Editor,
Thanks for printing my letter “AI for genealogy” (Nov. 8-9), in which I noted that an AI-generated explanation of my unusual surname was total fiction. Now I have a disturbing postscript.
Editor,
Thanks for printing my letter “AI for genealogy” (Nov. 8-9), in which I noted that an AI-generated explanation of my unusual surname was total fiction. Now I have a disturbing postscript.
The AI hallucination that my surname originated in England is rapidly spreading on the Internet. I don’t know why, but I suspect those web pages are also AI generated, because they read alike.
And because AI models use the Internet as training data, each iteration multiplies the mistake. Future researchers will wrongly conclude that “Halfhill” is English.
A growing number of sources now seem to verify it, and they often reference the same (false) source. But in fact, I have proof that the roots are German. “Halfhill” is a rough translation of “Halberg.”
This problem goes far beyond my name. As AIs keep spreading misinformation that seems plausible, the Internet becomes an even less reliable resource than it already is.
