Editor,
I write in response to the letter from your reader Tom Halfhill who expressed profound concern that AI is spreading the horribly false information that the origin of his surname is English, not German.
A quick Google search, using AI results, produced the following verbatim excerpt:
“The surname Halfhill is an Americanized form of the German surname Halberg, which was wrongly assumed to mean “half hill.” The actual meaning of “Halberg” is not explicitly provided, but the “half hill” translation is a mistranslation that led to the Anglicized spelling.
Origin Details: German Roots: The name’s origins are German, not English as some sources (which may be based on AI hallucinations) might suggest. Genealogical proof traces the name’s roots to “Halberg.”
Perhaps the imminent AI apocalypse implicit in his multiple letters on this topic has been momentarily postponed?
If so, I shall use my time wisely. Thank you.
