It took four votes by the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors to oust Sheriff Christina Corpus; it will take three votes to appoint a successor. Maybe it is just me, but that seems off somehow.
It is beginning to look like it could be a 3-2 vote to appoint the new sheriff when the board votes next Wednesday. There are seven applicants for the job and they cover a wide gamut.
Recorded the day after the November 2025 election, Mark and Bob are honored to be joined by U.S. Congressman Kevin Mullin to break down the massive results in California and the shifting national political landscape.
Episode 16 Highlights:
• Prop 50 Landslide: Analysis of the overwhelming passage of Prop 50 in California. Congressman Mullin discusses the astounding 58.5% voter turnout for a single-item special election. The governor's messaging successfully framed Prop 50 as a critical defense against attacks on California by the authoritarian president, sending a strong national message that Californians recognize the threats to democracy. Mullin explains the nuance that the mid-decade redistricting was a temporary measure intended to preserve the power of the non-partisan citizens commission for the next census.
• National Democratic Surge: Are Democratic victories in Virginia, New Jersey, and other states a "rebuke of Trump" or a sign that "Democrats are back"?. Mullin argues that successful candidates—whether very progressive or moderate—shared a focus on affordability and kitchen table issues.
• The Government Shutdown & SNAP Benefits: We examine the crisis caused by the longest government shutdown in history. Mullin details the real-world effects, particularly the impending loss of Affordable Care Act tax credits (potentially doubling or tripling premiums) and the immediate expiration of SNAP benefits for vulnerable residents who rely on them to feed their children. He criticizes the administration for its "chaos" and providing unreliable information.
• The Redistricting Arms Race: Congressman Mullin outlines the "troubling trend" where 20 states are considering redistricting, aiming to maximize partisan advantage. The focus shifts to California’s goal of winning all five newly redrawn Democratic seats.
• Gavin Newsom’s 2028 Prospects: Following the Prop 50 success, Mullin views Governor Newsom as a potential frontrunner for the 2028 presidential nomination. Mullin praises Newsom as a masterful communicator and savvy politician who is "as talented as they come politically".
• Local San Mateo Issues: The show addresses the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors’ 3-2 vote to appoint a new sheriff after Sheriff Corpus was removed from office. Mullin expresses disappointment in the unnecessary saga and the urgent need for a high-caliber leader to stabilize the office and restore faith and trust.
In closing, Mark and Bob reflect on the comprehensive nature of Congressman Mullin’s job.

Thanks, Mr. Simon, for another episode of “As the Sheriff’s World Turns.” I know there was (and perhaps still is) a hullabaloo about electing vs. appointing a Sheriff but voters spoke in electing Corpus (a big mistake almost from the start) so I’d imagine an appointed Sheriff can’t be worse. Regardless, let’s see if San Mateo County can emerge from darker days and better yet, not be in the regular news cycle unless there are positive results. Good luck to each candidate. A reminder that you’ll need to clean up after a flawed administration and you can see what Trump has to endure in cleaning up messes from former administrations. Remember to do what’s best for America, and the County, not what’s best for those pushing their ideology against common sense.
As for the chat with Mullin, where were the tough questions? It would be interesting to know why Mullin voted against the One Big Beautiful Bill, essentially voting to increase taxes on everyone, considerably. Why Mullin voted against the Laken Riley Act, choosing to promote biological males competing against biological females. Why Mullin voted against the SAVE Act, essentially opting to undermine free and fair elections. And most of all, why Mullin has been against the American people on every major issue. But I guess if those questions were asked, Mullin might opt to never appear on your chatfest in the future.
