The San Mateo County Transportation Authority is narrowing down a handful of projects near Highway 101 as part of an initiative to reduce congestion and improve safer non-vehicle travel options in the area.
The 101 Corridor Connect program is meant to connect various local, state and federal agencies on projects along the highway within about a 1-mile radius. While focused in San Mateo County, the effort is part of a larger regional project, spearheaded by Caltrans, that would make improvements along Highway 101 from Santa Clara County up to San Francisco.
The TA, which administers the county’s transportation-allocated sales tax revenue, narrowed down a list of top-priority projects in the northern and middle parts of the county, such as improvements on Oyster Point Boulevard, Grand Avenue and the Millbrae Caltrain station. They also include improvements along El Camino Real, part of another large-scale long-awaited effort called the Grand Boulevard Initiative, which range from less-resource-intensive projects to more capital-intensive initiatives, such as bike lane additions, vehicle lane reductions and bus shelter upgrades.
“Being included in the strategy as a priority project is not a guarantee of funding, but it gives us the opportunity to bundle projects together, looking for ways to strategically identify funding and to really help the TA to step up our technical support, technical assistance and project delivery support for our local cities,” Sue Ellen Atkinson, manager of planning and fund management at the TA, said.
The list also includes the extension of the express lane north of Interstate 380, a controversial project that some transit advocates have said won’t reduce congestion.

Funding has yet to be secured, however, Atkinson said the TA has identified a number of potential sources from programs and agencies at various levels. The top projects in the southern part of the county have yet to be finalized, though, the board will review a draft list early next year.
The projects came largely from individual cities’ existing plans, rather than TA-driven efforts.
“I appreciate that we are not inventing new projects locally. We are going off the existing plans that have been approved by the cities because we don’t want the TA to seem like a behemoth that is saying do X, Y or Z,” board Chair Carlos Romero said. “We really do want to respect that local authority, and I think this project is really an example of that.”
The board will vote on the north and midcounty plan next month.
