Since retirement a few years ago I’ve made it a point to try and stay knowledgeable about not only what goes on regarding the city I grew up in, San Mateo, but the county as well. That’s why I really enjoy reading Mark Simon’s column each Thursday.
Last week’s column mentioned former Sheriff Carlos Bolanos who preceded disgraced former Sheriff Christina Corpus and his yet to be determined run for sheriff to fill the vacant position made possible by Corpus’ justifiable firing by the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors.
I met Carlos about five or six years ago. We both belong to the same fitness club and, at the time and even after he was running for reelection, I only knew him as Carlos, not knowing he was the current sheriff at the time. My point is I got to know Carlos from the club and sincerely enjoyed the camaraderie not only he had with me, but with many of the other club members both male, female, old like me, people of his generation and younger as well.
He is not only sincere but well read, politically savvy and you could see how he would interact with other members, treating everyone with respect. If Carlos decides to run for sheriff he’ll have my full support. From my perspective he has the communication skills and more importantly the leadership we will need to heal the fractured department the previous sheriff left us with.
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Wackerman, and congratulations on retirement. I’m jealous. It’s apparent that Bolanos was the correct choice a few years ago instead of Corpus. (If I recall correctly, before the election, there were letters/comments highlighting a history of problems with Corpus.) Unfortunately, folks were fooled by the sparkle (did Corpus have her expensive, sparkly ring – gifted or purchased, depending upon who you believe) of someone who met “woke” criteria more than merit. And as a result, we have our continuing “As the Sheriff’s World Turns” soap opera. Let’s see which candidates throw their hat in the ring but I’d say Bolanos, should he choose to run, would come in with less of a lower learning curve than others as he is familiar with San Mateo County.

Thanks you for your letter. I voted for Carlos then and will again.
