Bob Wackerman’s letter (Nov. 5) makes good points regarding the atrocious transit-friendly project planned for San Mateo. He also pointed out that this monstrosity resulted from the state-mandated “housing goal” from ABAG. My impression is that they use historical data as a predictor of future commuter patterns and behavior, and these data are also championed by the well-funded YIMBYs. But current trends, including working remotely and no major influx of jobs or workers, apparently are given little consideration.
Moreover, predictions of severe droughts and quality-of-life deterioration hasn’t stopped them from plowing ahead with an unfounded, arbitrary mandate to increase our population by up to 30% in many areas. California, like every region, has limited resources and infrastructure capacity, and having quadrupled in population since the 1950s, has pretty much reached that limit. If you think water conservation has been a mere inconvenience in the past, just wait when you’re sharing our diminished supply with 30% more residents.
Put simply, these projects are all about the money, and not about what’s best for our citizenry.
