Editor,
The New York Times tells us that local news is in crisis. Some estimates state that since 2005, 3,200 print newspapers have vanished. On the average, two newspapers close every week.
The decline of local newspapers and the “nationalization” of political news have served to polarize vote choice and people.
Local news reminds us of how much we have in common like wedding announcements, obituaries, local school sporting events, etc.
Newspapers represent the personal values and ethics of the editor, and Jon Mays is no exception. Like most involved citizens, I contact Editor Jon Mays seeking support for special projects and publicity for special causes and candidates. Jon is notorious for giving everyone a fair shake and featuring both sides of any topic. His standards give fair representation to all people, including concerned citizens, elected officials, tipsters and whistle blowers. Even his columns are so balanced and logical, it is hard to debate his reasoning.
People in the know, in San Mateo County, start their day by reading the Journal over their morning coffee. The Journal is in high demand at the Copenhagen Restaurant in Burlingame every morning, and probably at many other dining establishments. Most people will not drink their coffee without rummaging around the restaurant for the available copies.
The Journal is essential to the public good in San Mateo county. To Jon Mays and the Journal staff congratulations and thank you for your excellence in reporting. Please continue the good work. We need you.

Well said. Let's celebrate fair local journalism that is praising local politics when they do well and is criticizing them when they don't.
Any "influencer" (or politician) on social media will tell you it's not the 1000 "Likes" that make them better, it's often the one critique that makes them think harder.
At least that is true for the good ones - the bad ones just ramp up their marketing budget more. Which again helps voters to see the truth.
Well written, Ms. Kuhre. I’d recommend that people in San Mateo County or any other county purchase a subscription to the Daily Journal. So if you’re late riser and physical paper copies are gone, you can pull out your tablet or phone and continue enjoying the Journal over your morning coffee. With a subscription you can also enjoy the paper during breakfast, lunch, dinner, nightcap, family gatherings, etc. And please contribute feedback to articles, op-eds, polls, anything. I can’t speak for everyone but I’d like to read/react to your thoughts.
Terence Y, Thank you for supporting the Journal and my view point. Subscriptions are the best way to insure continued news publications for our (yes, our) SM Daily Journal. Where and when can we meet for a cup of coffee? My treat! 650 773 3669.
