Editor,
It is unfortunate that some who purport to advocate for pedestrians and cyclists, embrace the e-bikes, which are menacing to both.
Editor,
It is unfortunate that some who purport to advocate for pedestrians and cyclists, embrace the e-bikes, which are menacing to both.
Hardly a day goes by that I don’t see e-bikes speeding down the sidewalk. Recently, I witnessed an e-bike nearly hit a young girl while popping a wheelie on the sidewalk at Washington Park. The riders, who are mostly adolescent boys, have mad skills, but poor judgment or observance of the law.
The American College of Surgeons declared e-bikes a public hazard, due to the rapidly rising occurrence of serious injuries.
I would add that they likely contribute to the soaring rates of childhood obesity. While the popular narrative is that an e-bike means one less car, it’s far more likely to replace a pedal bicycle.
These machines are also not compatible with bicycles in the narrow bike lanes, as they are so much faster and heavier. Perhaps a separate lane for them would be appropriate.
While e-bikes are, no doubt, fun to ride, they have serious downsides that should be addressed, especially the riding on downtown sidewalks that has grown unimpeded and will inevitably result in a tragedy, if not curtailed.

Separate lanes for e-bikes would be great. Unfortunately, many communities in the County have too few regular bike lanes as is.
As you indicate, there would be less concern or danger with this new technology if kids had a safe space to ride them.
The author here might be a little bit confused about e-bikes. Don't worry, most Democrats are.
The administrations of George W. Bush, Donald Trump and Arnold Schwarzenegger had this all covered. The federal law signed by Bush was created to simplify the whole e-bike situation and did so very well:
- <1hp with pedals: low-speed electric bicycle, is to be treated as "non-motorized" and as any other regular bicycle would. ADA laws call these Mobility Devices.
- >1hp, >30mph. These are not e-bikes anymore, this is a moped or motorcycle. These are handled in other parts of the vehicular laws and regulations.
This was simple, this was enforceable. Anything faster than 30mph without license and registration can be impounded.
But then Sacramento and Bay Area Democrats came in and messed up the whole thing by inventing weird, indistinguishable classes and then start banning them.
Now a lot of - especially old people and council members - are completely confused.
It's really about discrimination of course - as is typical with San Mateo Democrats.
