An alleged drunk driver’s crash Nov. 16, into a power pole on Ralston Avenue caused power outages and subsequent road closures along the street, as well as power outages for residential Belmont customers, Belmont police Lt. Peter Lotti said.Â
Burlingame resident Reyber Choychuiquita, 19, allegedly collided into a power pole on westbound Ralston Avenue, just west of Hallmark Drive, at 3:05 p.m. Nov. 16, Lotti said. Following the collision, power went out along the street and in nearby neighborhoods.Â
Power has since been restored and the Ralston Avenue pole repaired, per an update on the police department’s social media, but the street was previously closed between Hallmark Drive and West Belmont Canyon Road due to the stoplight power outages caused by the crash and construction needed to fix it.Â
Ralston Avenue was reopened in the afternoon of Nov. 17. Around 478 Belmont customers experienced a power outage, a representative from Pacific Gas and Electric said, and power was restored for all residents by 1:45 p.m. Nov. 17.
Choychuiquita was arrested at the scene on driving under the influence charges.Â
As a general rule, at any intersection where lights are flashing red or the light is completely off — which can occur when power is completely shut off and battery backups can’t be accessed, like in this instance — drivers should proceed like they’re at a four-way stop, Lotti said.
