Kamala Harris recently said President Biden and Trump gave Israel a “blank check” to wage the war against Hamas. She meant it as a negative, but actually, it is a positive. Israel has weakened Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria and Iran, which created the conditions for acceptance of the 20-point peace plan by Israel and Hamas, which resulted in freeing the remaining living hostages. Hamas must give up governing Gaza and its arms. There is hope for a two-state solution if the Palestinians get new nonviolent leaders. Such leaders who want peace in Israel have been in hiding because they risk being killed by Hamas. There are now reasons for hope for peace.
Too bad the Israeli government won't reign in the violent settler element which sees the bible as suggesting that they can burn down Palestinian towns and orchards in hopes of driving them away. Try and figure the logic there!
Mike - even Trump told Netanyahu to knock it off. The encroachment by Israeli settlers is vile and severely damages my opinion of the Israeli government. Netanyahu and his rightist extremists are criminals in my book. Until he cleans that up, I will be against any further assistance to his regime that tolerates the settlements.
Speaking of trying to figure the logic there, Mr. Caggiano, please explain the logic behind Hamas launching a surprise attack on Israel. What did Hamas and their supporters gain? Losing what, 30 souls for every 1 Israeli lost? And that’s with Israel’s targeted response. Perhaps Hamas should have chosen to try and figure the logic before their attack so the wouldn’t be receiving the reward they richly deserve.
Norman - the world has ben focusing on Hamas but European think tanks have already concluded that they are like mushrooms that will go dormant. Once the attention blows over, they or similar groups will reemerge. The Israelis are fully aware and know that only the Palestinians themselves can root that pest out. I don't believe that we, who are not of Middle Eastern decent, understand or even appreciate their culture and values that are inherently different from ours. By attempting to impose our systems on them is pure folly and is doomed as even the British had to concede. Israel will have to somehow learn to live with their decision to live in a region that has not been Judea for centuries.

Excellent letter that describes the reality of Hamas's War. Iran saw the opportunity to establish itself in Palestine the near Middle East.
