With the initiation of a new rent control ballot measure in Redwood City, Rhovy Lyn Antonio of the California Apartment Association accuses Faith in Action of sowing division in the community by proposing it (“New initiative is seeking rent control in Redwood City,” Nov. 1).
Let us remember that when women proposed that they be given the right to vote, the idea was highly divisive. Similarly, when African Americans insisted that they should have the right to sit at a lunch counter alongside whites, it was considered highly divisive. The fact that a proposal gives rise to opposition in no way means it is wrong. As history has demonstrated, it sometimes takes time for people to come around. Finally, that something is considered divisive is a choice. Isn’t it unfortunate when controversial issues are considered divisive rather than seeking tools together to support underrepresented and vulnerable communities?

The California Apartment Association has never seen a measure to protect renters from usurious increases that they like. This powerful lobby is responsible for much misery and the displacement of working people, seniors, families and veterans. Councilmembers who take their money and side with their self-interest do a disservice to the community.
