1979 Basic Training, soon after our flight, like all military members, was taught about the Uniform Code of Military Justice and our duty to obey lawful orders, and refuse unlawful ones, I was guarding the dorm door when an NCO appeared outside the little door window and ordered me to let him in.

Craig Wiesner

I told him to show me the proper ID, as I’d been trained. He kicked the door, banged and yelled at me, and I refused. After around five minutes of hazing, he showed me his ID and I let him in.

The Nuremberg Convention of 1945 established the rule that following an order is no excuse if the order is illegal. The war criminals falsely assumed that “following orders” would be a solid defense. How wrong they were!

Yawn, snore…here we go again. Another another almost 800-word column from Mr. Wiesner with cherry-picked stories (whether true or not) of alleged incidents. The most meaningful takeaway from Mr. Wiesner, “As a former “barracks lawyer,” someone with no legal training who still thinks he understands the law, including the UCMJ…” No legal training. And seriously, citing Reuters, the NYT, and PBS for their reporting? We can’t tell whether they’re reporting accurate stories of making them up. I’d vote for the latter.

Hey Mr. Wiesner, where is the outrage over Obama authorizing over 500 drone strikes and killing more people, including civilians than 20 drug boats being smoked? I don’t recall the same outrage expressed by Democrats over Obama’s precedent. More power to Trump to increase enforcement operations and to smoke more boats. I’m still hoping we get to 30 before Christmas and 100 before St. Patrick’s Day. If we’re lucky, we’ll get to 500 but we may need to add land targets to the mix.

How about explaining why Democrats have become the party of supporting criminals and terrorists more than the American people. How about writing about the numerous incidents of violence against ICE and the National Guard? Did you catch psychotherapist Jonathan Alpert’s interview with Fox News (https://www.foxnews.com/media/psychotherapist-says-trump-derangement-syndrome-real-pathology-plaguing-75-percent-his-patients)? Basically, he confirms what many of us already knew, TDS is real.

Yeah, you can “Yawn, snore” as much as you need, missTY, when your only respond is another mix of the same words. Don’t you understand what the exchange you respond to, is all about? Have you ever wondered why you get so few positive comments on your dribbles, - if any?

Jorg

Hegseth should be charged with giving the illegal order to bomb the alleged drug boats, while those carrying out the illegal order should be charged with carrying out an illegal order. But what if Hegseth says that he just followed Trump’s order? Can Trump then be charged with violation of international law? This can be interesting!

Another great op Ed, Craig! I really enjoy how you illustrate your well-thought out points with personal experiences.

You’d think the issue of not obeying an unlawful or unconstitutional order would be well-settled by now, as it’s been 50 years since Nuremberg and the principles are laid out in the UCMJ.

Sadly, those who believe might makes right — so long as they are the ones wielding the sword, of course — keep arguing about it. You’d almost think they want to, and enjoy, killing people.

Nuremberg was 80 years ago last month.

Jorg

Yes, and as valid as ever!

Epstein files last month: vanished the second they stopped hurting Trump.

Today: Color Revolution 2.0 to remove him. If you cared about democracy, you’d build better candidates for 2026/28 instead of scripting the next coup.

Smart people wasting energy on D.C. drama we can’t control while the Bay Area/Sacramento is a mess: gang shootings, 500+ fentanyl deaths, tent cities, missing $26B, trafficking, budget craters, kids who can’t do middle-school math, families (and tax dollars) fleeing. Those problems are here. Those we can actually fix.

But nah, Venezuelan boats it is.

Yes Craig - perhaps it has escaped you that the video by these representatives can have more of an impact than the aberrant activities of a low level military official. My Lai comes to mind. There is no evidence whatever that Trump would authorize or has authorized illegal orders. Nonetheless, the UCMJ, with which all of us in the military had to become familiar, does allow for refusing to carry out certain orders. Your examples are just another cheap shot at undermining a valued institutions. Your President Biden flaunted every law on the books for 4 years. all considered illegal but you never seemed to have the time or the interest to bring that into context of your experiences.

Terrific column as usual Craig. Commander "Bone Spurs" would have to ask for an interpreter if he actually had to read and understand the Universal Code of Military Justice. I still feel the title I gave him of "Caligula on the Potomac" is probably best. He does indeed live up to the dismal standard it sets. Poor us.

Terence Y

Speaking of dismal standards, Mr. Caggiano, we should all be worried about Democrats promoting the welfare of criminals and terrorists over the American people. About Democrats pushing for biological males to compete and discriminate against biological females. And we can’t forget, about how Democrats completely ignored Hamas’s surprise attack on Israel and instead blamed Israel for everything.

Fortunately, we can thank our (yes, our) great President Trump for ending the Israel/Hamas war and continuing to Make America Great Again, Again. Now if only Democrats could stop living to the dismal standard they’ve set and instead, take the helping hand President Trump is offering them. If not, these TDS-infected Dems can continue clutching their pearls while the Trump Train rolls over them. Clickety-clack!

Craig - all of your prior articles were well written and intense. This particular one knocked my socks off, so well written and the main emotion I detected - PASSION.

Thank you for who you are, what you do, and your accessibility.
