Dan Walters in his Nov. 25 column correctly states that the cost of living in California is much higher than in most of the country. He then quotes Dave McCulloch, the chairman of the Transparency Foundation, a conservative economic think tank. To wit: “This report should be a wake-up call to all Californians, that they are being unfairly punished by the bad policies imposed on them by their politicians … .”
My beef with this quote is that neither Mr. McCulloch or Dan Walters follow up with an explanation of what these “bad policies” are.
It’s easy for Mr. Walters to point out our high cost of living (which we already know), but it would be much more positive if Mr. Walters would write a follow-up column explaining what “bad policies” he thinks are most responsible for California’s high cost of living. That could help us ordinary citizens more clearly understand the issues and might even to motivate us to reach out to our politicians to ask for a change to the policies that are contributing to our woes.
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Crabbe, but if Mr. Walters were to take up your challenge, he would need to offer more than a few columns. It would take a book or two or more. I’ll accept your challenge and recommend reading ongoing articles from new media sources such as californiaglobe.com or calmatters.org. I prefer California Globe but these two sites perform a public service with their coverage of what is mostly wrong (and sometimes right) with California. For environmental and resource articles, Mr. Edward Ring and his Ringside columns in californiaglobe.com does a great job detailing how bad California manages our natural resources. Happy reading!
