Residents and Caltrain riders will see another access point for the downtown San Mateo Caltrain station soon, as the City Council recently approved an agreement allowing the project to continue moving forward.
The new entry would be located at the north end of the northbound platform, near the intersection of Cypress and North Railroad avenues, and would better accommodate pedestrians and cyclists, according to a staff report. The northbound platform is only currently accessible from the south end of the station.
The project, which technically began this summer, is a joint effort between the city and Caltrain and is largely grant funded, with some local matching funds. As part of its overall plan, the city is also looking into potentially implementing one-way traffic on Cypress Avenue between North Claremont Street and North Railroad Avenue “to accommodate on-street parking on both sides,” the staff report added.
“Right now there is only one way to access the train station in downtown from my district in North Central, and this will expand the ways in which it can be more accessible,” Councilmember Nicole Fernandez said.
The project is one of several pedestrian and bike-related improvements the city has in the works, in addition to train-related initiatives. It’s also working on improving bike lane infrastructure on Delaware Street, as well as 19th Avenue and Fashion Island Boulevard.
In August, the City Council also decided to move ahead with efforts to establish a train quiet zone in the city, which requires the implementation of federally-mandated safety improvements at certain track crossings based on their risk indices. The efforts would likely include at-grade street closures at Villa Terrace and East Bellevue Avenue.
