High-tech executives are spending millions of dollars lobbying the Congress to block any state legislations from regulating artificial intelligence. A super PAC called, Leading the Future, with an initial funding of $100 million from major AI investors is targeting state representatives who propose legislation to regulate AI. Build American AI, an advocacy group launched a $10 million campaign to prevent states from regulating AI.
The dangers of AI are abundantly clear. Parents of two teenagers filed law suits against OpenAI and Character.ai, accusing use of bots from these companies led to their children commit suicide. Former AI developers are warning parents and teachers about children losing critical thinking skills when they use AI to do their homework. AI based apps are already used to create deepfake nude images of anyone. Another already growing problem is the threat to jobs by AI. Experts are already warning us super intelligent AI could be an existential threat to human race. Power consumption by AI data centers can accelerate climate crisis.
Against all this ominous warnings, tech executives, like tobacco executives, are pushing a dangerous product on us, using same deceptive techniques. We must all warn our representatives in Congress to stand firm against the tech titans and reject a bill that will ban states from regulating AI.
Thanks for your letter, K. Sathya, but IMO the toothpaste is out of the tube, similar to tobacco. One can attempt to minimize dangers but ultimately, it will be up to the user (or their parents/guardians/babysitter) to educate themselves or their charges. Good luck out there.
