The district has just completed construction on Sandpiper Elementary School in Redwood Shores.
Students are headed back to school next week in the Belmont-Redwood Shores Elementary School District after the completion of a $54 million building and modernization project wrapped up this week.
School will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 11, because of the construction, but the project was on time and on budget, said Superintendent Michael Milliken, noting that it has been a bit of a child-care crunch.
“The school year is also going to end three weeks later,” Milliken said. “But all these kids are effectively going to be walking into new schools and I’m very excited. We didn’t want to have construction going on simultaneously with classes.”
Six of the seven district sites underwent a major 10-week modernization program this summer, with nearly 250,000 square feet of updates. There was also construction during the summer of 2012, so the total facilities upgrade has been going on for the past 16 months. The district added 28 classrooms to address enrollment growth and there were more than 400-500 tradesmen working daily at the sites.
“It is a marvel and an accomplishment to get this much work done so quickly,” Nellie Hungerford, assistant superintendent of business services and operations, wrote in an email. “I celebrate the amazing work of Blach Construction and Lionakis Architects.”
Two bonds worth $60 million provided funds for the classroom upgrades. Redwood Shores Elementary School was the only school that went untouched this year since it was just built in 2010. Last summer, the school did add six classrooms, a bike rack and a brand-new playground, along with improved bike access to the school.
“There is a little teacher anxiety since they’ve been kept off campus until today,” Milliken said. “The deadline for them to prepare for school is today to Tuesday and the first day of school is Wednesday, so there’s not a lot of wiggle room.”
School will end on June 25, 2014.
