Burlingame School District Trustee Dan Devoy announced he will be leaving the position effective Nov. 18, leaving a vacancy on the district Board of Trustees that will need to be filled by the end of the year.
Devoy, who was appointed to the board himself in March 2022 and then elected in November 2022, has “been a steady pillar of integrity, kindness and a champion for the often overlooked,” according to a press release from Superintendent Marla Silversmith.
The Board of Trustees has 60 days to decide whether it will call a special election or appoint someone to serve for the rest of Devoy’s term until the end of 2026. The board is set to begin reviewing its options and take action at its next meeting, Oct. 14.
Devoy’s seat on the board must be filled — either by appointment or election — by someone who lives in trustee areas 1 or 4. The district moved to by-trustee area elections in November 2022.
Trustee Area 1 includes the southwestern most part of the district’s jurisdiction, which includes the location of Hoover, Lincoln and Roosevelt elementary schools. Trustee Area 4 is the southeastern part of the district’s jurisdiction, which includes the location of Washington Elementary School.
Devoy and Trustee Doug Brown are the last trustees that were voted “at-large.” Both of their terms expire December 2026.
Trustee areas 2, 3 and 5 will not be up for election until 2028. Trustees Katie Jay of Area 3, Nicole Mustafa of Area 5 and Caitanya Bhuskute of Area 2 were elected in 2024 and their term will expire December 2028.
