The Burlingame School District Board of Trustees agreed it will appoint the replacement for board President Dan Devoy, a choice in line with how the district has consistently filled its seats in recent history.Ā
Devoy announced his retirement from the seat ahead of his term ending November 2026, leaving a spot on the Board of Trustees vacant beginning Nov. 18. At the boardās meeting Oct. 14, it was unanimously approved to seek an appointment rather than hold a special election to fill the vacancy.Ā
The ultimate decision to opt for appointing Devoyās replacement comes down to the cost of a special election. If there was an election the district would front the cost that would otherwise āgo to salaries, benefits, anything else,ā Superintendent Marla Silversmith said at the board meeting.Ā
Devoyās seat on the board is at large until 2026. The district moved to by-trustee area elections in November 2022.Ā Devoyās replacement will serve the rest of his term, until November 2026 when they will be up for reelection as an incumbent.
Devoy and Trustee Doug Brown are the last trustees that were voted āat-largeā and both their terms expire December 2026. They will then be by district.
Trustee Area 1 includes the southwestern most part of the districtās jurisdiction, which includes the location of Hoover, Lincoln and Roosevelt elementary schools. Trustee Area 4 is the southeastern part of the districtās jurisdiction, which includes the location of Washington Elementary School.Ā
Devoy, who was appointed to the board himself in March 2022 and then elected in November 2022, has ābeen a steady pillar of integrity, kindness and a champion for the often overlooked,ā Silversmith said in a previous press release.
