Editor,
On Dec. 29, the Rev. Penny Nixon wrote a stirring essay regarding the plight of people who cannot afford housing.
Unfortunately, she labeled housing as a right. Humans have a right to life, liberty and property and the freedom of speech, assembly, press, petition and others.
These rights and freedoms require only constraint on the part of others.
When labeling goods and services such as housing, food, clothing, medical care and education as rights, others are forced to provide these.
For a right to housing, materials providers, builders, carpenters, electricians and others would be forced to provide these goods and services with no compensation.
Landowners would be forced to provide access to their property at no cost or even have it confiscated.
The usual alternative is forcing taxpayers to pay for these goods and services. The true rights of these people are violated.
It is admirable to assist people in need but that assistance is not a right.

Two for one…
Well written, Jacky Hood, with great observations. Until Rev. Nixon and those with her same mindset are walking the walk to open up their homes to those who need it, I’ll ignore their talking the talk.
Thanks for your comment, MichKosk, making important points that would take me much longer, especially in the morning, to relay. An upcoming Happy New Year to you and your family. It’d be great if you could submit comments earlier in the morning so as to beat me to the punch, so to speak, with astute and common sense observations. Our mutual friend Mr. van Ulden has done so quite a number of times. (And a Happy New Year to you, Mr. van Ulden, if you’re reading this.) Just kidding, I welcome your comments any time.
Ha! I beat you this morning on this one Terence! I don't comment as prolifically as you however. Happy New Year to you and your family, look forward to more from you in 2026.
Great letter that really illustrates the differences in liberal/progressive vs. conservative philosophy. The left attempts, as the Reverend did in her op-ed, to paint themselves as "moral" by arguing that things like food, shelter, health care etc. are "human rights". But these "rights" require taking from others in the form of higher and higher taxes, which has nothing to do with morality. It is kind, good and moral to give of yourself (whether your money or time) to the extent you can- starting with your own family and extending to your local and then broader community. Taking from others so government can provide whatever benefit you think is a "human right" is in no way moral.
