Editor,

It is rare that I will side with our governor on an issue. He and his band of incompetents in Sacramento have turned California into a second-tier state. California is now ranked last in “opportunity.”

Thanks for your astute observations, Dr. Howard. Democrats claim to be for women’s rights but based on their discrimination against biological females, they can no longer make that claim. Just a part of the continued unraveling of the Democrat party. Not only has Trump remade the Republican Party but it appears Trump has laid waste to the Democrat Party and the values they once espoused, but apparently, were never serious about. Lately, that’s par for their course since Dems are now against electric vehicles that are supposed to save their world.

MichKosk

Thank you doctor for a dose of common sense. You are of course correct that hormones and surgeries don't make a man a woman, nor do they erase male advantage in sports. And in high school sports (which was what the conversation with Newsom was about), there is no requirement for boys to be on any hormones or medication-they may simply say they "identify as a girl" to be allowed to compete in girls' sports.

For those who think this is "such a small issue" that it doesn't matter, or who think it is a good thing, I will continue to ask - WHAT ABOUT THE GIRLS? Do girls, of all ages, not deserve fairness, safety, privacy and dignity in their sports, private spaces, locker rooms, etc.?

Jorg

Well, let's not underestimate girls! I once had a girlfriend (yes, we are still friends!) who not only outswam me, but also out-slalomed me on skis, - me, who had been skiing since I could walk! She also got her PhD in math and became a math professor at a major university.

Jorg

And let me add, - she had the beauty to match, - and 12 years younger than me, - even back then!

MichKosk

Why do you think women have their own sports categories, Jorg? I in no way "underestimate" girls, and your anecdote has nothing to do with the issue at hand. Men and boys, as a group outperform women at all ages and all sports. They should be celebrated in their own right and not compared to men and boys. (You have previously stated that you agree with me on this issue.)

Jorg

Yes, I do! Still!

Ray Fowler

Hi, Michelle

You asked, "Do girls, of all ages, not deserve fairness, safety, privacy and dignity in their sports, private spaces, locker rooms, etc.?"

Fairness? Yes. Safety? Yes. Privacy and dignity? Yes, yes. Most people, including Gavin Newsom, agree with you. Apparently, Marc Berman disagrees with you and the governor.

According to the NYT, 79% of Americans said biological males who identify as women should not be allowed to participate in women’s sports. Yet, state legislators like Marc are committed to digging their heels in and risk losing federal funding.

MichKosk

Thanks Ray.. for anyone curious about the Marc Berman reference, type his name into X and you'll see the disdain he has for women who ask questions, and voters in general, and his lack of care about the $8B federal school funding California stands to lose due to the insistence on violating Title IX and FERPA.

jesg

I disagree. It’s a nuanced issue and therefore difficult to explain in social media friendly blurbs. If anyone out there actually wants to understand this issue, I suggest watching the latest episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver which is free to view on YouTube. At least you get the facts and context served with some entertainment.

MichKosk

John Oliver is a horrible misogynist based on that episode. Mocking women and what they do in bathrooms, not a minute of sympathy for women injured and cheated by men playing in their sports. Why do you think women have their own sports categories? Issue is in no way nuanced. Men cannot become women. Women deserve fairness, safety and privacy in sports, spaces and locker rooms.

LittleFoot

Late night legacy talk shows are not where you should be going for anything - Jimmy Kimmel/John Oliver/Colbert/John Stewart are not bastions of truth or entertainment - they are petulant little children who shamelessly do the bidding of the corporate sponsors. Blackrock - State Street - Vanguard.

edkahl

Someone who feels they are a transgender person should not discriminated against. But young teens should not be given operations or drugs to alter their biological gender until they are old enough to know for sure. Nor is it fair for a woman who takes male hormones to participate in woman's sports.

easygerd

This is a totally made up "crisis".

Former Republican Governor and current NCAA President Charlie Baker says:

Fewer than 10 out of 510,000 athletes or 0.002% are transgender athletes competing at more than 1,000 colleges and universities. And those 0.002% include transgender athletes on men's teams.

"Save Women's Sports" - a leading voice promoting the ban - found only five transgender athletes competing on girls' teams in school sports for grades K through 12.

Now compare that to the doping crisis in track and field, steroids in baseball, PED at the Tour de France, brain damage of football players ...

Or the financial exploitation of "student athletes" and even more so of regular students and the tuition they pay to fund those "student athletes".

MichKosk

Not sure where you get your stats but there are more than 5 boys on girls' sports teams just in the Bay Area. We really don't know how many state wide because the CIF doesn't actually keep records.

How many would it take for you to think the rights of girls and women are important?

Regardless if it is a "made up crisis" let's just return female sports at all levels to female only as Title IX envisioned- how is this even an issue since it "affects so few"? Then we can move on to the things you consider more important.

Dirk van Ulden

easygerd - "a leading voice promoting the ban - found only five transgender athletes" A leading voice in San Mateo County only?? I have been made aware of at least six transgenders who infiltrated girls sports right here in our community, at the K-12 and HS level. If there were so few according to the "voice", why so much publicity? It seems that there is a bit of denial going on.

easygerd

10 out of 510,000 are competing for scholarships and Olympic medals.

There is no real problem. So what is really going on?

Another comedian once found this explanation:

Q: What do the abortion and transgender discussions have in common?

A: It allows old men (and apparently women) to fantasize all the things going on in teenager's panties.

Dirk van Ulden

Come on easygerd -statistics are meaningless. And, you are just deflecting the issue that parents have about their girls being unnecessarily concerned about their safety and womanhood. The cry for normalcy is in play as is the tyranny of the minority.

MichKosk

What an absolutely bizarre and dismissive response.

It is unfortunate that you don't think girls and women deserve fairness, safety and privacy in sports and locker rooms at all levels. This isn't about scholarships and Olympic medals.

Terence Y

eGerd – TBot here. Your opinion on fair play and women’s rights is interesting. I doubt I’ll change your opinion but your cherry-picked statistics from the NCAA (BTW, even if it were 1 out of 3 million athletes, it still wouldn’t make it fair) is nowhere indicative of the number of biological men competing against biological women, of which as long as this travesty is allowed, will continue to increase. For those who missed it, here are links to articles about the injustice of biological men competing against biological women (article links: https://nypost.com/2024/10/23/opinion/un-report-proves-trans-athletes-in-womens-sports-is-a-problem/ and https://nypost.com/2024/10/23/world-news/un-reveals-how-many-female-athletes-have-lost-medals-to-trans-opponents-in-explosive-report/ and the UN report link: https://documents.un.org/doc/undoc/gen/n24/249/94/pdf/n2424994.pdf).

You ask what is going on. If cheating is allowed, more and more people will begin to cheat. Who wouldn’t want to go from being nowhere close to winning against biological males to begin winning against biological females? Even Newsom talks the talk in admitting to the unfairness. As to whether Newsom will walk the walk to reverse some of his policies to address the unfairness remain to be seen. I predict he won’t and I’m sure he’ll get, if he hasn’t already, a stern talking to by his fellow Dems.

easygerd

Let's face it, this discussion is not about fairness.

The Republican politician in charge the problem is not that big: 0.002%

The University of Chicago did a survey about how many athletes are using PED: ca. 10%

If this was about fairness and not the thing that comedian said about "dirty old men" (and women) we would be discussing the fairness problem that is 5,000x more urgent.

This has nothing to do with "fairness", this is the typical culture war topic that is basically solved already.

Instead we could be discussing ALL the different real fairness topics around "student athletes".

MichKosk

You go ahead and talk and fight for what you think is more important. The thing with PEDs is no one is saying that kind of cheating is OK "because it is only a few" or because the athletes using them would kill themselves if they were denied these drugs. Sporting bodies are already testing athletes for PEDs and working on that issue. Very few are fighting for the girls and women's rights to fair and safe competition and privacy in locker rooms - in fact the Democrats are fighting for the opposite.

You are cherry picking a (likely false) stat from NCAA and ignoring cheating boys/men on other levels including several right here in the Bay Area. If you care, please check out HeCheated.org or SheWon.org where the real stats from all over are complied by volunteers.

Again, how many would it take for you to agree that men/boys shouldn't be allowed in female sports? For me, the correct number should be zero.

And your accusation of sexual perversity for those who care about this issue is just gross.

easygerd

Yesterday a female referee officiated the Warrior's game - Oh The Humanity!

"Very few are fighting for the girls and women's rights to fair and safe competition"

I would hope so, because the Republican leader of the NCAA said very few girls and women are actually in danger here. 0.002% is miniscule compared to 10% who are probably taking PED - a problem absolutely NOT in check.

A former Republican governor and current man in charge of the NCAA said the problem is none-existent. He said that in front of congress, basically under oath and he seemed very relaxed about the whole thing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LugaJMEOoho

(and I want again point to the "dirty old men"-theory discussing topics they have outgrown some 50 years ago - and sure for the sake of this argument let's call it just locker room talk. )

MichKosk

Ok, so you won't answer how many it would take for you to think this issue is important. I've asked twice now. Did you look at the sites I provided? This goes beyond NCAA, even if Baker's number is correct.

What a weird argument anyway. "Cheating is OK if it is only a few!"

Ray Fowler

Hey, Michelle... all that's missing is a string of exclamation points.

easygerd

Only some 1-2% of "student athletes" even make it to professional leagues. That number is even lower for women and "professional" in their case means little to no pay - is that fair?

All this 'dirty talk' is really all about exploitation and taking advantage of ALL students - not just the athletes.

Mens sana in corpore sano:

- when done in elementary school we call this Physical Education (PE) and nobody cares if boys and girls are together.

- when done in high school and college regular students are shut out and only the top performers get support.

Starting with high school suddenly "mens sana in corpora sano" changes to Principals and Deans playing NFL and NBA owner. It has nothing to do with students anymore. It's purely an exploitation culture fostered by principals, superintendents and deans wanting to play NFL owner.

The fairest thing to do would be to get rid of pre-professional sports in schools altogether. It's not a worthy public expense - it should be DOGED immediately.

If the NFL, MLB, NBA need recruiting, let them set up and pay for their own minor leagues. They should be prohibited from using public education funding for exploitation like that, especially if congress things it's all unfair.

Just one example: According to Berkeley and Stanford leadership their campuses are now located on the Atlantic Coast. Sounds like leadership and fans could use a few geography lessons.

Regular students are paying tuition and raking up student loans to essentially just pay for the travel and hotel costs of "student athletes" that will eventually burn out and college leadership pretending to be Big League. Ridiculous.

... and just like that transgender kids are not a public problem anymore because private leagues like the NFL and NBA can do whatever they want and people can choose with their feet and their money instead of just providing "fairness lip service".

Terence Y

eGerd – TBot here. Let’s face it, this discussion and this issue is all about fairness. The fact you continue to rely on a cherry-picked and misleading statistic of 0.002% to the exclusion of all other evidence is telling. The bottom line is that 0.002% is not absolute 0 means it isn’t fair. This is the typical culture war topic that only serves to divide rather than unite and will not be solved until we all return to common sense.

easygerd

Hi TBot - the fact that Lance Armstrong - The Biggest Sports Cheater in History - is one of the leading voices against transgender girls tells us everything we need to know. The LiveStrong guy becomes creepier and creepier as he gets older.

10% unfairness vs 50% unfairness vs 0.002% unfairness, which one is the lowest hanging fruit here?

- 0.002% of student athletes might or might not be taking away spots of biological genders

- a self-reporting 10% of athletes are cheating by using PED - the dark number is much, much higher

- and estimated 30% of student athletes were sexually harassed within just the last year

- 50% is the number for girls being sexually harassed

Which means thousands of girls don't make the cut because another girl with PED is taking that spot. Thousands of girls might not even try to make the cut because of fear they eventually have to take PED or accept being sexually harassed or both. Now that is really unfair, wouldn't you agree?

Terence Y

eGerd – TBot here. Sorry, but nobody buys your 0.002% assertion because the NCAA, nor their statistics, speak for the world. You’ve obviously chosen to ignore the links I’ve provided reporting how many medals have been lost by biological females due to biological males. Since late last year, I’m betting there are many more instances of this type of cheating. As such, your comparisons aren’t valid.

But don’t you think kicking biological males out of biological female locker rooms and other private areas would lessen sexual harassment of females? It’s amusing you try to justify unfairness with a misleading statistic which you keep repeating to create a false narrative/comparison. To repeat from MichKosk’s observation, “It is unfortunate that you don't think girls and women deserve fairness, safety and privacy in sports and locker rooms at all levels.”

easygerd

Hi TBot -

My numbers come from the man in charge and under oath and your numbers coming from the "UN-Report" have been debunked multiple times.

The number 10 out of 510,000 NCAA student athletes was given by the Republican politician in charge in front of congress. Basically under oath did the man with all the data say, it's a non-issue. period. And the NCAA is the only organization that really counts as it includes Division I, II, and III.

The NAIA is much smaller, has far fewer student athletes and is mostly made up off private and faith-based institution. Their numbers are even smaller.

But back to the faked "UN-Report", which first of all wasn't an UN report, secondly counted the same medals double or even triple, and was about self-reporting on shewon.org with little to no data verification of correctness.

For example the report is citing WORLDWIDE numbers for all the last 24 years. It includes things like Irish Dance competitions, cancer FunRun, and even Poker. Pretty sure, not "winning at cancer FunRun" or Poker - where gender doesn't even matter - justifies the pretend-outrage.

And we know it's "pretend-outrage" about fairness - otherwise you would join me in lobbying against school athletics exploitation, PED, sexual harassment, legalized online gambling, gender-different payments, etc.

All these topics are much more unfair to real female athletes - not just the made-up ones.

Terence Y

eGerd – TBot here. You mean the NCAA “man” is in charge of all athletic competitions around the world – a dictator? We know this isn’t true. As such, although you rely on your one-trick pony 0.002% assertion referencing cherry-picked NCAA statistics to show fairness, it does the opposite and proves unfairness. Pretend-outrage? Tell that to the women who were cheated out of medals and awards and recognition. Faked “UN-Report”? Um, if we can find and read the report, it’s not a fake report. And why would you think gender doesn’t matter in dance competitions, FunRuns, and even Poker? Please cite studies based not on opinions, please.

But again, don’t you think kicking biological males out of biological female locker rooms and other private areas would lessen sexual harassment of females? It’s amusing you try to continue justifying unfairness with a misleading statistic which you keep repeating to create a false narrative/comparison. To again repeat from MichKosk’s observation, “It is unfortunate that you don't think girls and women deserve fairness, safety and privacy in sports and locker rooms at all levels.” BTW, how about Burlingame eschewing a full bike lane on Trousdale? Seems they realize convenience and efficiency for the masses are more important than catering to folks who only occasionally use dedicated bike lanes? Thoughts? It's still tough to lug home 10 bags of groceries or a case of bottled water on a bike.

MichKosk

This thread and Egerd's responses are really the gift that keeps on giving for a good laugh. (I will no longer engage with that poster as he/she has proven incapable of normal back and forth dialogue after several tries- on X I would "mute" this person.)

I guarantee though that Egerd, who wants to eliminate high school sports entirely, is in no way "lobbying" for a variety of sporting related causes now including eliminating on-line gambling. Arguing in a local paper comment section is not "lobbying". I did some actual lobbying on this issue this week with excellent results.. may be some changes in California coming due in part to the exposure resulting from my efforts!

T- thanks for fighting the good fight. You are correct on the sexual harassment issue resulting from men being allowed in women's locker rooms. Two recent local incidents:

In SF a clothing optional spa tried to institute a monthly "biological women only" night and faced protests and claims of human rights violations by trans rights activists- the most outspoken being a male convicted rapist claiming to be a woman.

In Berkeley at the YMCA a woman saw a naked man in the women's locker room. She went out to swim and came back 30 minutes later, only to find the same naked man. An elderly Asian woman who barely spoke English motioned for the man to cover up his genitals, and the man got in her face screaming to the elderly woman that she must have a sexual problem. When the first woman went to complain to the front desk, she was told by the Y that there is nothing they can do under the law.

So that is where these insane policies lead - fetishists and sex offenders sharing private space with women and girls.

easygerd

T-Bot, isn't it funny how quickly your turned into a DEI warrior for equality and fairness for pretend-cheated female athletes?

How very "woke" of you :-)

Terence Y

eGerd – TBot here. Isn’t it funnier how you fail to respond to simple questions because your house of cards arguments have been exposed as unconvincing? And not just by me, as MichKosk and Mr. van Ulden have noted. But you do bring up a good point… Female athletes were “pretend-cheated.” By biological males cheating by pretending to be females. Now if you and folks with your same opinion “woke” to that fact…because, to repeat from MichKosk’s observation (she’s summed up the issue so well), “It is unfortunate that you don't think girls and women deserve fairness, safety and privacy in sports and locker rooms at all levels.”

easygerd

Here is what's really going on. The Democrats have their favorite Virtue Signaling around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion but as Nicole Fernandez and Danielle Gwirko-Godycki have proven in San Mateo that San Mateo Democrats couldn't care less about DEI.

Now the Republicans learned from that and created their own little DEI project. They were however smarter as they chose a "woke" topic that was already fixed, but allowed dirty old man to continue giving "locker room talk" speeches. Sweet.

The next projects the Republican will propose:

- Everyone should have color TV!

- Make oxygen free for everyone!

- Our drinking water has too much Dihydrogen Monoxide!

MichKosk

Easy seems incapable of a back and forth dialogue, looking at actual facts or answering questions but sure has a lot of opinions about other things that he/she thinks we should all find more important that the issue being discussed. I'm surprised bike lanes weren't thrown in there for good measure.

easygerd

... and look at that, it was never really about the fairness. If it was you all would be joining me in calling out doping and creepy coaches in school sports.

How many transgender athletes played in the Final Four or the Sweet Sixteen or March Madness? My guess not even one - otherwise it would be all over the news.

But how many of these student athletes took drugs or were harassed by these or previous coaches? Presumably plenty.

This has always been a dialogue to support populism. It is a problem that never was one and now populistic and creepy politicians can claim they fixed it with laws that were never needed because the correct rules were already in place.

And how do we know it was only about populism and not good science or good policy:

- Gavin Newsom (he who also opposes bike lanes btw.) switched sides :-)
