Is this the right time for county politicians to create a new entitlement program? No. A good idea is not sufficient in itself to justify an expensive execution. Already several local government entities plan to submit sales tax or bond measures for the November election. With these pressures for more taxes, how is it possible that the county has $10 million for a new entitlement? What is the source of that money? The $10 million will set up childcare for 1,200 children, about $8,300 per child. The navigation portal of the program will assess the eligibility for subsidy of the parents.
And that is what this plan is: a substantial subsidy to one group of people paid for by other people. Paying for this entitlement is intended to come from three sources: an unspecified government agency (tax money), business owners (tax money) and parents (the recipients of the benefit). Note the presumption that employers should contribute. Another expense for businesses! How much harder can politicians make it for businesses, especially small ones?
What’s the difference between childcare and babysitting? Bureaucracy. Childcare is a powerful stimulant for bureaucracy: Needed will be certificates and diplomas, staff training courses, personal hygiene and cleaning SOPs, specifications, more documents, more records, all leading to requests for more taxes. Do you think the cost per child will stay at $8,300? Not likely.
Thanks for your letter, Ms. James, and especially the last paragraph regarding bureaucracy. This boondoggle taxpayer money giveaway is all about the money. Money transferred from our wallets to be wasted on increasing bureaucracy with a discriminatory program, and of course, union jobs. Requiring more and more of your hard-earned money being transferred to union workers. Methinks the $8300 is just a starting point. Vote NO on any tax measures because more money will be wasted on further, discriminatory, giveaways.
