Electric bikes are powering an urban transportation revolution. They flatten hills, haul cargo and people, and offer an alternative to driving that doesn’t involve breaking much of a sweat or waiting for a bus.

I’ve experienced these wonders firsthand. For the last three years, I have used an e-bike — an electric-motor assisted bicycle — to do everything from commuting 23 miles across Los Angeles for work to meeting up with friends at places where finding a parking spot takes longer than the drive over. In a city choked by traffic and pollution, calling these machines liberating isn’t an overstatement.

Thanks for your guest perspective, Mr. Thornton, extolling what you feel are the virtues of electric bikes. Unfortunately, electric bikes, and bikes in general, are not convenient to lug 10 bags of groceries or a case of bottle water home from the grocery store. Electric bikes are not convenient for dropping off or picking up kids from school, with or without their musical instruments or sports gear or whatever else they need. Electric bikes are not convenient in inclement weather and I’m sure some folks are not happy with showing helmet hair while on Zoom calls.

That being said, electric bikes have their place and their usage and whatever safety measures that can be placed, and even more importantly, enforced, should be implemented. Better yet are fees which can be used for bicycling infrastructure so they don’t continue their free ride. And please let’s not pretend electric bikes are a transportation revolution.
