Police and fire crews in San Mateo respond to a fiery crash on Tuesday. The car crashed into a light pole near the 1900 block of Alameda de las Pulgas and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
An 89-year-old man was killed in a solo car collision in San Mateo on Tuesday.
According to a press release from the San Mateo Police Department, the man’s vehicle sped through a red light, hit the center median, causing the car to become airborne and hit a light pole.
The car, a gray Tesla, caught fire after landing at a chain-link fence. Law enforcement said the investigation is still ongoing, and it is unclear why the car was traveling at such a high rate of speed. A witness said the man appeared to be unconscious, according to the press release. No one else was injured in the collision.
This marks the second fatal collision near that intersection within the past year. Last summer, a woman was killed when the driver of a Ford SUV ran a red light from the eastbound State Route 92 off-ramp and collided with the car, killing her and sending the two boys to the hospital.
