Both Marty Medina and Rico Medina are well known in the San Bruno community for their commitment to service on the City Council. Rico Medina has served on the City Council since 2005, and as mayor since 2022. Marty Medina has served on the City Council since 2015.
Both are well versed in city business with Rico Medina serving on more regional boards, including Caltrain, SamTrans and the Transportation Authority, where he serves as a reliable San Mateo County vote, while Marty Medina is generally more communicative with the people of San Bruno.
A vote for either has its benefits as both understand the essentials of the job, and its meaning. However, the people of San Bruno could use a slightly more engaged mayor — one who corresponds quickly and tries to find solutions. Rico Medina does this, but Marty Medina does it better. Marty Medina has made hands-on community service part of his very ethos and goes to every downtown merchant meeting and takes heat about the poor rollout of the parking meters. Maybe it’s time to give him a try as the city’s top elected official.
Marty Medina made a mistake in not voting for the Mills Park development the first time around, in part because he was trying to be the voice of the people and see if there was a better deal to be had. That’s good instincts but it proved to be problematic in the long run. However, he learned from that mistake.
Rico Medina also made mistakes in how he treated staff, and also learned from that mistake that led to a council censure.
There are times that call for a reset, and this is one. And there are also times that call for a more responsive leader for the city, and this is one. Marty Medina deserves your support.
