San Mateo County state legislators have secured two-thirds of an important but complicated revenue source tied to vehicle licensing fee revenue — equaling about $76.5 million — from the state’s 2025 budget.

Both the county and its incorporated cities have long struggled with the unique bureaucratic mechanisms that deploy VLF funding. A 2004 change in the distribution system of VLF, which comes from taxes on California vehicles, left local governments with far less revenue than previous years.

Hardly mentioned here is what kind of funding Papan and Becker have secured.

This funding was actually supposed to be going to schools and education in the form of Education Revenue Augmentation Funds (ERAF). But for many years now the county decided to give schools less money and keep the "Excess ERAF" for themselves. (source: CalMatters)

So if people want to believe education is underfunded ...

... then Diane Papan and Josh Becker are basically hating our kids and stealing funding from schools.

If people want to believe Diane Papan and Josh Becker are doing good here ....

... then they are also agreeing with Papan and Becker that all San Mateo school districts are already overfunded and the money should go back to cities and counties.

Only one storyline can be true here, the politicians can't have it both ways.

Thank you to Diane Papan and Josh Becker for making this happen!
