Based on a preliminary police investigation, the box truck involved in a fatal collision that resulted in the death of a 16-year-old e-motorcycle rider was making a “lawful turning movement” from Highway 1 onto Terrace Avenue when the collision occurred, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Gretchen Spiker said.
The e-motorcycle rider, who the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office identified as Montara resident Cash Justin Krawetz, was riding at “a high rate of speed” on Feb. 9 on the Highway 1 shoulder, according to an email from Spiker. The box truck was making a right turn, she said, and Krawetz was unable to stop in time, resulting in the collision.
The Major Accident Investigation team is still looking into the collision and has gathered information from witness statements on-scene and a preliminary investigation, the email said.
“The Sheriff’s Office continues to keep Cash, his family, and the entire Coastside community in our thoughts following this tragic collision,” Spiker’s Feb. 17 email read. “The Sheriff’s Office is continuing to share educational and safety information with youth and students about the laws relating to e-bikes and e-motos.”
Deputies responded to the scene at 12:15 p.m. Feb. 9 in Half Moon Bay, when the rider, who suffered serious injuries, was subsequently transferred to the hospital. Sheriff’s Office was notified he died at the hospital later that evening, a previous press release from the department said.
The driver of the box truck is cooperating with the investigation, the press release said, and an initial investigation found the driver to be properly licensed and that alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a contributing factor.
