Friends of the San Bruno Public Library is hosting an annual book sale on April 26, inviting community members to fill up a regular-sized grocery bag with gently-used fiction, nonfiction and children’s books for $10.
The event, hosted at the downstairs community room below the San Bruno Public Library, will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Book buyers can enter the sale early, at 9:30 a.m., for an additional $10 cash.
Friends of the San Bruno Public Library has been hosting book sales for more than 40 years, treasurer Dave Dornlas said, both in the library lobby and through semiannual events. The group sorts through and sells books donated to the library throughout the year to create additional revenue for library programming and needs.
“A lot of folks clean out their house, kids run off to school, move out, you have these books laying around to bring in and donate to the library,” Dornlas said. “We sort through and find out [the] value.”
Over the years, used book sale proceeds have gone to a variety of library needs, including 3D printers, computers, an additional self-checkout for the children’s room and programs like jazz music and baby sign language.

The goal of the group is to facilitate easily-accessible reading and knowledge expansion, Dornlas said.
“We’re trying to make it easier for people to read and be informed, to use the library,” he said.
Currently, yearly membership dues for Friends of the San Bruno Public Library nonprofit are $20 for an individual, $50 for a family and $100 for benefactors, according to the city’s website. San Bruno residents volunteer to participate in the group because they’re supportive of the public library mission and the many free services provided.
“It’s a small group, we’d like to grow,” Dornlas said. “It’s a small, dedicated group of folks who come in.”
Book donations are not necessary for the upcoming sale, Dornlas said, but community members wishing to donate books, CDs and DVDs in good condition may drop them off at the library during open hours, with a limit of two bags or boxes per week per household.
