A pedestrian was struck and killed early Saturday as he attempted to cross U.S. Highway 101 in South San Francisco, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash led to a second collision and the arrest of a motorist for driving under the influence, the CHP said.
A Hyundai Ioniq was northbound on the highway, just north of the South Airport Boulevard offramp, shortly before 3 a.m. when an unidentified man ran from the center divide toward the right shoulder and into the path of the car, Officer Mark Andrews, a CHP spokesman, said in an interview.
The Hyundai driver stopped and called 911 and remained at the scene, Andrews said. The pedestrian was treated at the site and declared dead at 3:14 a.m.
Meanwhile, a red Kia Soul approaching the location was unaware that the Hyundai was stopped and struck the rear of the vehicle, Andrews said. The Kia overturned onto its left side and blocked traffic, he said.
The driver of the Kia, who was not injured, was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol, Andrews said.
