U.S. Rep. Tom Lantos, D-San Mateo, commemorated the start of Black History Month with a tribute to six Bay Area African Americans who have contributed greatly to the region.

In a statement placed in the Congressional Record, Lantos recognized the work of Dr. Veronica Hunt, dean of the southeast campus of City College of San Francisco; Dr. J. Alfred Smith, professor and senior pastor at Oakland's Allen Temple Baptist Church; Terrance Kelly, artistic director for the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir and director of the Foothill Community Gospel Choir; public health leader and advocate Mikael Wagner; Sally Joan Baker, executive producer and host of "Wee Poets," a youth poetry television show; and renowned portrait painter Andre White.
