California Highway Patrol officials said a 60-year-old Daly City man was struck and killed by a pickup truck Sunday afternoon on northbound Highway 101 in San Jose.
The collision was first reported at 4:14 p.m. on Highway 101 just north of Alum Rock Avenue.
The victim was driving a Mazda MPV minivan with multiple upgrades, such as windshades and chrome wheel wells, when he heard an unfamiliar sound, CHP Officer Ross Lee said.
The man drove and parked on the shoulder of the highway and got out of the van to check to see that nothing on it was loose.
As he was standing on the left side of the van, the driver of a Ford Ranger veered to the right, and the Ford sideswiped the Mazda and hit the victim, Lee said.
No one else was injured in the collision.
