The College of San Mateo Bulldogs (2-0) opened the JUCO softball season with a doubleheader sweep Saturday over Taft College (0-2).
Nia Mapa
The reigning California Community College Athletic Association state champs rode five innings of one-hit ball from sophomore right-hander Nia Mapa to a 6-3 victory in the opener. Mapa then homered twice in the nightcap to fuel a 12-3 victory, and power freshman left-hander Lola Sierra to the win in her collegiate pitching debut.
Mapa was 2 for 4 with two homers and five RBIs in the finale. Sophomores Lilyana Williams and Hannah Ames each homered in the opener. There were each 3 for 5 with two RBIs in the series.
With the 2025 Bulldogs leading all Northern California teams with a .356 batting average, Mapa proved a valued two-way player as a freshman, batting .410, but with just one home run. After going 0 for 2 in Saturday’s opener, she surpassed her freshman homer total with a three-run walk-off blast in the bottom of the sixth of Game 2 to invoke the mercy rule.
Taft’s Cadence Mizener went 3 for 3 with an RBI in the finale, and catcher Keona Comilang totaled three hits in the series.
After going 6-0 in the circle last season, Mapa’s career record improves to 7-0. Sophomore right-hander Gianna Tassio closed out with opener with two scoreless frames to earn the save. In the nightcap, Sierra allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits through six innings. The southpaw hit one batter but walked none while striking out seven.
