Menlo doubles Cooper Han and Lucas Ying fell short of the Cinderella story at the Central Coast Section individual boys’ tennis tournament. But they certainly had fun making a run at an unlikely title.

Han and Ying settled for runners-up in the CCS doubles tournament, advancing to the finals before falling 7-5, 6-2 to Saratoga’s Nikhil Srivatsa and Aviva Goldwater, the No. 2 seed, Thursday afternoon at Imperial Courts Tennis Club in Aptos.

“Obviously, we were a little disappointed, but that Saratoga team was actually really, really good,” Han said. “There’s not a ton more we could have done. It was honestly just a really great tournament for both of us, and we were just really happy with how the entire tournament went. It was just a great memory for both of us, and it was just super fun playing together.”
While Han has played as Menlo’s No. 1 singles player for the last two seasons, Ying had hardly ever cracked the starting lineup. The two are best friends, though, and chose to pair as doubles partners for the CCS individual tournament. In Wednesday’s quarterfinals, they knocked off the No. 1 seed, Menlo’s Yuanye Ma and Ben Levin.
Thursday, Han and Ying advanced through the semifinals with a roaring comeback 4-6, 6-4, 14-12 against St. Ignatius. They staved off three match points in the super tiebreaker, rallying from a 9-6 deficit, to advance to the finals.

“That was a really great match for us, actually,” Han said. “We’re both going to remember that one for a while.”
Han scored the final point of the semifinals on a service return, punishing a soft serve with a strong backhand.
“I just ripped a backhand crosscourt and ... it was just in the very corner of the court, and they just couldn’t get to it,” Han said.
Srivatsa and Goldwater advanced through the semifinals with a comeback as well, defeating Los Altos 2-6, 7-5, 10-3.
It has been a long stretch of tennis for Han, who Friday will join the rest of his Menlo team in Folsom, as the Knights open play in the CIF USTA Nor Cal Championship tournament at Broadstone Sports Club. Menlo opens play at 10 a.m. Han said he expects to join the team for the semifinal round, scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m. The finals are slated for Saturday at 1 p.m.
“I feel good,” Han said. “Doubles is obviously not as strenuous. It’s a lot more fun. But, yeah, I feel great. I’m definitely ready for this weekend.”
In the CCS boys’ tennis singles tournament, Mitty’s Alexander Sanford, the No. 2 seed, won the championship with an upset in Thursday’s finals. Sanford rallied for a 0-6, 7-5, 10-4 victory over No. 1-seed Somei Ogata of Saratoga.
