Bhattacharya climbed the podium at the CIF State Wrestling Championships, held Thursday through Saturday at Dignity Health Arena in Bakersfield, to claim a fourth-place medal in the girls’ 100-pound division.
After opening with three straight wins last Thursday — reaching the semifinals with an 11-4 decision over Mira Mesa junior Mahea’ani Manibusan — Bhattacharya fell Friday via major decision to Buchanan freshman Alexandria Marin to move to the consolation bracket. Her win Saturday via 9-3 decision over Chaminade sophomore Olivia Munson moved her to the third-place match, where she lost via second-round fall to Mountain View junior Kiana Lien.
Bhattacharya is in her first year at M-A as a transfer from St. Francis-Mountain View. Her former Lancers teammate Katherine Love, a San Mateo native, medaled at 130s with an eighth-place finish.
Garcia falls just shy of the podium
Serra junior Sebastian Garcia advanced to the blood round at 157s, and was seconds away from qualifying for a medal when he was taken down with two seconds remaining for a 10-9 loss to Millikan junior Chris Anguiano.
Garcia went into the third round leading 6-3, and scored another quick point with an escape. Anguiano then recorded a takedown, but was trailing 9-6 after Garcia scored a reversal. Anguiano rallied for a one-point escape and a three-point takedown to win it.
Serra tied for 24th in the team standings out of 178 schools. It marks the best finish in program history for the Padres in the state tournament.
Solomon Zumbado was 2-2 at heavyweights to place top-16; Ryan Doleschal went 3-2 record at 113s; and Leon Bleess posted a 1-2 record at 175s.
