Pluto Halterman, Half Moon Bay girls’ wrestling. The junior swept her way through the 190-pound bracket of the CCS Masters finals Saturday at Watsonville High School. Halterman recorded three pins on the day, culminating in a first-round fall in the championship round to earn her first CCS title, and punch her ticket to the CIF State Wrestling Championships opening Thursday at Dignity Health Arena in Bakersfield.
Jean-Luc Uharriet, Burlingame boys’ basketball. The Panthers made history for their biggest margin of victory in a CCS playoff game Saturday, rolling to an 83-19 win over Soledad in the second round of the Division II tournament. Uharriet was dialed in from long range, hitting 5 of 5 from beyond the arc to score 15 points. Burlingame followed suit, by shooting 14 for 28 from 3-point territory throughout.
Andrew Tafolla, El Camino boys’ soccer. The senior midfielder extended his points streak to six games in a row as he helped lead the Colts to a 4-1 over Latino College Prep in the first round of the CCS Division V bracket. Tafolla scored twice and added an assist. He has scored a goal in four of his last five games and in the game he didn’t score, he picked up a pair of assists.
Charlotte MacAvoy and Kaitlyn Schuh, San Mateo girls’ basketball. The Bearcats’ “Twin Towers,” the junior pair both posted big double-doubles as the Bearcats rolled past Leland in the second round of the CCS Division II bracket. MacAvoy scored a career-high 28 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Schuh nearly matched her teammate, finishing with 21 points and 18 boards.
Jonah Hernandez Berland, Hillsdale boys’ basketball. After seeing limited action during the season, Hernandez Berland got an opportunity in the Knights’ CCS Division II opener and responded. Hernandez Berland scored a game-high 26 points, knocking down four 3-pointers along the way, during a 55-39 win over Lincoln.
Brady Skidmore, Hillsdale boys’ soccer. The Knights’ Energizer Bunny, the always hustling Skidmore saw his hard work pay off as the No. 4 Knights topped No. 5 Westmont 3-0 in the first round of the CCS Division I bracket. After a scoreless first half, Skidmore found the back of the net twice as Hillsdale moved into the Division I semifinals and earned a spot in the Nor Cal playoffs next week.
Juliet Chen and Neela Prabhu, Nueva School girls’ soccer. Several Mavericks overcame illness to front a 6-0 win over Oak Grove in Saturday’s CCS Division V playoff opener. Chen was one of several players who were questionable until just before game time, but the senior stepped up to score two goals. Prabhu, a freshman, also scored two goals.
