Republican claims that waiters will be helped by eliminating taxes on tips is a lie. People who will primarily be helped are restaurant owners who will no longer need to pay their half of payroll taxes. I’m sad that California’s U.S. senators, Padilla and Schiff, both buckled under to vote for such a useless law, instead of standing up to offer a Democratic alternative that would actually help tipped workers..
If Democrats did in fact want to help tipped workers, they would have eliminated the ridiculous tipped-minimum wage of $2.13 long ago.
If Democrats want to start winning elections in poor states, they would show some backbone and eliminate the federal tipped-minimum wage of $2.13 immediately. At least stand up and start talking about it!
Thanks for your letter, Ms. Byrne, but I’d like to remind you that a Senate version of no tax on tips passed, 100-0. I’d also like to remind you that Kamala Harris copied President Trump’s no tax on tips policy. That being said, I’m not sure your take on payroll taxes is correct since the BBB hasn’t been finalized. BTW, perhaps you can pass your concerns to lawmakers and they can incorporate your suggestion or request further clarification.
