As a Los Angeles native and climate advocate who lived on the East Coast for nine years, moving back to California as an adult has been both a dream come true and a rude awakening. Homelessness and wildfires underscore the urgency of our housing and climate crises. Luckily, policies like Measure T can help us address both while balancing needs across the city.
Much discussion about Measure T has, unfortunately, suffered from distortions and inaccuracies. The fact is, Measure T (and affordable housing in general) will not increase crime rates, and co-locating housing near existing transit like Caltrain will help prevent future greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution and, yes, traffic. Building near existing infrastructure will require minimal need for additional utilities. San Mateo already has most of the pieces in place needed to grow in a measured and sustainable way in the upcoming decades; we just need our housing policy to match.
Most importantly, though, the health of a community relates most strongly to the character of its people. I believe that, as a community, we are capable of building strong relationships with new residents no matter their background or income level, and that they will be great partners in helping us support the local businesses, schools and institutions that make our city proud. Growing our community in a trustful, measured way will help our city thrive.
So, I am voting yes on Measure T because I believe in strengthening the vitality of our community.
Sorry, Mr. Poindexter, but Measure T is a flawed bait and switch measure. The most important fact is Measure T repeals Measure Y so whatever “protections” were given under Measure Y is now taken away. If folks have voter remorse, they can change their vote in the future as I expect there will be future Measure T “clones” in the near and far future. Meanwhile, I’d recommend folks start voting out the folks who decided to put Measure T on the ballot. Measure T may create places to live at exactly where they want, and not the most convenient. Vote NO on Measure T.
