Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind of the Oct. 7 attack on Israel that started the war, has been killed. This is a great time for Hamas to release all hostages and sue for peace as Israel has achieved most of its goal of holding Hamas leaders responsible for the killings.
But Hamas will not release them and the war will continue. Hamas elected Sinwar to replace Yaniyeh the former leader killed in Tehran, so there exists a mindset among the remaining militants of defiance and recalcitrance. Whoever takes the reins of Hamas will follow in Sinwar’s footsteps, perhaps on the orders of their Iranian overlords.
We will see a shift in Israel efforts in Gaza and the West Bank to killing of Hamas militants regardless of rank, and by sheer attrition Hamas will be decimated. It could take months, all the while cease-fire and release of hostages will be on the table. The Lebanon effort will also continue because Israel sees Hezbollah as every bit responsible as Hamas for Oct. 7. A third front in Iran could be forthcoming as well.
All this because 50 odd hostages remain captive in the tunnels of Gaza.
Well said, Mr. Constantino. Hamas and Hezbollah have made their bed and they must now lie in it. As long as Hamas and Hezbollah want to continue the war, more power to Israel and their mission of destroying Hamas and Hezbollah. And Iran, should they want a piece of Israel.
