Taking cellphones out of school is a long overdue idea. The attention of every one of our children is being challenged every day in schools across this nation by cellphones and finally a long overdue solution is being introduced. Three cheers for our governor and all school leaders that follow his request. Where was this idea years ago when we introduced cellphones to our children? Our children will be surprised to learn that what they learn in school is more important and beneficial to them than the internet. Why did this take so long?
While lots of schools already have policies prohibiting cell phone use by students in classrooms, those policies are unevenly enforced by teachers. The rationale offered by some instructors is that their students are using their cell phones to search for information on the internet related to the lesson plan being presented in the classroom. That doesn't work. They're kids.
Students can wait until they have a break to check their phones. If we don't divert our kids' attention away from social media and focus their attention on learning in the classroom, we are at risk of preparing a future labor force uniquely qualified to ask, "Do you want fries with that?"
Thanks for your letter, Mr. Nice. On one hand, perhaps Newsom can allow school campuses to install cell phone jammers in their campuses. On the other hand, perhaps students need cellphones so they can access the Internet to determine whether what the teacher is teaching is based on fact or whether it is fake news or lies. After all, we all know there’s an overabundance of fake news and lies during this last decade and ongoing now. Have you caught any of the hysterical screeching from the Democratic National Convention – an avalanche of fake news and lies regarding Trump and his supporters? But no policies. I wonder why?
WIFI and cell towers on or near school grounds should also be curtailed due to potential adverse health impacts on the young developing bodies and brains of children.
