There’s been a lot of anger and fear expressed about Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency. I agree with a lot of the anti-DOGE criticism. But there’s a bigger issue involved than “merely” inappropriate access to personal information.

Do Elon and his stooges understand the critical difference between private sector and public sector organizations? Given that none of the DOGE boys have, so far as I can tell, ever served in a public sector capacity, the answer is probably “hell no.” And that can have major consequences.

Thanks for your guest perspective, Mr. Olbert, and your 700+ words in a feeble effort attempting to change the narrative regarding DOGE. While completely ignoring the tremendous waste and fraud on taxpayers, by both the government and the private sector in the form of NGO’s. I recommend you read the hearing wrap up by the DOGE subcommittee (https://oversight.house.gov/release/hearing-wrap-up-doge-subcommittees-first-hearing-uncovers-billions-lost-to-fraud-and-improper-payments-launches-war-on-waste/) and watch The War on Waste hearing (https://oversight.house.gov/hearing/the-war-on-waste-stamping-out-the-scourge-of-improper-payments-and-fraud/). Of note: fraud rates in private sector businesses experience fraud at a rate of around 3 percent whereas the federal government’s fraud rate is about 20 percent.

As it is, my greatest takeaway from your perspective is that government should maybe be run more like the private sector. BTW, over 77 million people voted for Trump/DOGE so apparently they’re not too worried about Elon and his band of merry men. In fact, survey says… DOGE is seen as a promise made/promise kept. I admit watching Democrat political theatre/outrage/cussing/lying is quite enjoyable. Of course, who wouldn’t resort to hysterics if their slush funds are being cut?

As is your tradition, you missed the mark completely. These federal agencies have not undergone credible audits for years. Why would you, as a self-appointed financial expert, be opposed to an audit? Most of us would be pleased when DOGE does not uncover fraud and waste and would only restore or reaffirm our trust in the government.

edkahl

Why do Democrats fear having our $6.7 trillion in Federal spending last year reviewed by Elon Musk at President Trump’s request? Every public corporation is required to have an independent audit but the government essentially audits itself. While the GAO (Government Accountability Office) and the CIG (Office of Inspector General) audits our spending, nothing in the Constitution prevents the President from reviewing government spending and reporting any irregularities. And yes, Musk has top secret clearance.

Not So Common

Mark, I would guess if the Biden administration had created DOGE and put George Soros, Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders in charge, you would be on your platform clapping like a seal and barking how the federal government needs accountability. All your columns are simply an attempt at making Trump and his administration a villain at every turn. 79 million people all see through your party’s ideological, and hypocritical whining. We won, so please stop trying to turn diamonds into dirt.

Thank you all for your comments, I really appreciate them, as they highlight better than I ever have just why many conservatives can't think critically.

Dirk van Ulden

Mark - I tried to walk in your shoes for a while, contemplating critical thought. It did not long for me to stumble and I ran into a common sense post whereupon I lost my consciousness. I was rescued by our first MAGA responders. In your book, disagreement equates with lack of critical thinking; the typical liberal playbook. I am convinced that the San Carlos voters miss you like a hole in the head.

Not So Common

Mark, thank you for your incredible detailed reply, obviously your response changed no one's minds because you said NOTHING, NOTHING, and then again you said NOTHING.... put your drink down, and put your safety helmet and mask back on and try replying with a coherent response that provides an argument.

And thank you, markolbert, for showing up on cue… As usual, our friend markolbert unable to answer questions or defend his POV so he resorts to throwaway comments and personal attacks accusing others of his own shortcomings. Hey markolbert, for the future I’d recommend proofreading and ensuring you don’t have more holes in your arguments than Swiss cheese.

Perhaps in the near future you can provide a perspective on why you hate our (yes, our) great President Trump more than you love America. Jealousy? Afraid of being canceled by the left? A cry for attention? A nature vs. nurture thing? Some of us would like to know how you lost your priorities. Meanwhile, have a Trump-tastic day. Looking forward to your next serving of hysterical screeching (aka winning for us). BTW, do you know when incandescent bulbs will be on shelves? I hear we can return to installing high-flow showerheads and high-flow toilets. Is this another way Trump is draining the swamp?

SMpool

Agreed Mr. Olbert! Conservatives gleefully shooting themselves in the face in order to "own the libs." Wait until their Social Security disappears, they or their buddies die of a preventable disease, or they lose their shirts on the next merch or crypto grift from the Mango Moron. Oh, wait... they'll blame that on Biden. President Musk is lining his own pockets by dismantling every rule or agency protecting us from his exploding vehicles, under cover of eliminating "government waste" and they are falling for it like true cult members. Very sad, but unfortunately no longer surprising. I will now wait for the usual suspects to pull out their canned replies from column 1, 2 or 3 of their playbook. I know they think they are drawing blood, but it amuses me.

Not So Common

SMspittle - musk takes no salary, he is only interested in curtailing government, waste and fraud which there is plenty of. Too bad you can’t think for yourself, too bad you can’t think past your own ideological head in the sand way of viewing life. The only ones who blame others for their misgivings are Democrats, they are victims of everything. “ you’re not black if you don’t vote for me “. Musk and his companions have found thousands of dead people still on the Social Security gravy train, there are 150-year-old people still collecting Social Security, but because you can’t think outside your small box, you refuse to give them credit for what they’re doing.

Dirk van Ulden

Hey SMpool - you forgot to include the kitchen sink. Where do you get your inspiration? A Happy Valentine to you from a MAGA/MAHA supporter.

Also on cue… a throwaway comment from SMpool. Thanks, SMpool, for another rabid leftie serving of hysterical screeching and for reminding us what winning feels like. Delicious. May I have another? Feeble attempt at scare-mongering but what else do you have? Nothing – only lame debunked Democrat talking points. Instead, like I recommended to markolbert, perhaps you can provide a perspective on why you hate our (yes, our) great President Trump more than you love America. Jealousy? Afraid of being canceled by the left? A cry for attention? A nature vs. nurture thing? Some of us would like to know how you fell like a true cult member so easily for the Dem narrative. Another Happy Valentine to you from a MAGA/MAHA supporter.
