A new 69-room hotel meant to cater to San Mateo County’s traveling business personnel is coming to North Fair Oaks after the Board of Supervisors granted the final approvals needed for development.
The new 18,715-square-foot, 69-room hotel proposed by Dazhi Chen with Commons Hotels LLC will be built at 2567 El Camino Real. The boutique hotel with its 48 parking spaces and wine and coffee lounge is largely meant to be a pit stop for business travelers but Chen has also shared his vision for creating a live entertainment and community gathering space.
“We want to be a big part of the community. … We want to be a gathering spot, a watering hole,” Chen said during Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting. “The neighborhood deserves something new and we’re committed to being a part of the neighborhood for a long time.”
Supervisors granted Chen a land use redesignation from multifamily residential to commercial mixed-use and authorized a merger between three parcels to allow for the project to move forward. Currently on-site are commercial spaces with restaurant and beauty services and four units of residential housing that will be demolished to make way for the new hotel.
Chen has offered to provide relocation assistance including a six-month notice before construction begins and coverage of any increase in rent for a year to the families living in the current housing, Community Development Director Steve Monowitz said.
Chen has also offered current residents employment opportunities at the new hotel once it’s opened and catering opportunities for the existing restaurant operator, Monowitz added, noting the restaurant owner plans to retire but the offer remains open.
“While this is a business, we do want to give back,” Chen said. “Our goal is to create great jobs and through great jobs, help families.”
