The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office is actively working with county officials to resolve an elevator outage that has caused in-person visitation to be temporarily paused at Maguire Correctional Facility.
Video visitation, telephone services and additional communication options continue to be available for incarcerated persons and their loved ones, according to a press release.
The mechanical issue with the facility’s only visitation elevator began in late June and the Department of Public Works and its contractor are waiting on parts, according to the release.
All elevators have been approved to be replaced by the count and the replacement project is scheduled to begin later this year, with the first elevator estimated to be completed by March 2026. When the facility was constructed in 1988, it was built with a single elevator in the non-secure portion of the facility to accommodate in-person visitation and permitting public access to secure portions of the facility would present serious safety and operational issues as well as concerns regarding ADA compliance, according to the release.
The Sheriff’s Office recognizes the importance of in-person visits and hopes the issue will be resolved soon. Staff are exploring additional video visitation options, according to the release.
