Previously-defunct electric vehicle chargers in Burlingame’s Broadway District have been replaced and are now up and running, EVgo Director of Communications Katie Wallace said.
EVgo owned and operated six fast-charging electric vehicle stations located at 1133 Chula Vista Ave., originally installed in 2019. Those chargers, which hadn’t been working for several months, have now been replaced with eight fast-charging stations, Wallace said.
It’s part of a larger effort by EVgo to update, repair or replace over 500 stalls countrywide in more than 20 states.
“We go out into the field and we address legacy equipment on our network. Some of the equipment is proverbially long in the tooth … this is one of those legacy sites,” Wallace said. “Repair wasn’t possible — we needed to just fully replace and upgrade this equipment.”
John Kervanian, Broadway Burlingame Business Improvement District president and a longtime advocate for the charger repair, says the community will be thrilled that the electric vehicle stations are once again working.

After a period of initial frustration around the broken nature of the chargers, Kervanian said he’s satisfied with the fix.
“They fulfilled their promises,” he said. “I’m excited about it. It’s a service our community needs and I’m happy it’s nearby Broadway and it’s upgraded.”
Pricing for the chargers is based on kilowatt hour usage and time of use, Wallace said. Like utility pricing, those rates change based on the time of day. Customers can use the EVgo app to compare those time-of-day rates, she said.
EVgo’s deal with the city of Burlingame means the city doesn’t pay for the equipment and EVgo can make money off the chargers. Generally, upgrading chargers anywhere in California is a worthwhile investment, Wallace said.
“California has one of the highest rates of electric vehicles in the country,” she said. “Demand for charging infrastructure is high across the state.”
